Yellowstone County is in south-central Montana, with Billings as the county seat. Billings is also Montana's largest city. The 2020 population was 164,731, the highest in the state, across 2,649 square miles. The Yellowstone River cuts through the county from southwest to northeast. The river got its name from the yellow sandstone cliffs along its banks here, and that name eventually traveled upstream to the national park 120 miles to the west. The Rimrocks, a long sandstone escarpment, run along the north edge of Billings. Just south of the city, Pictograph Cave has rock art dating back over 2,000 years. The annual MontanaFair in August is the state's largest event.
