Washington
Washington is in the northwest corner of the contiguous United States (which excludes Alaska and Hawaii). It’s nicknamed "The Evergreen State" because of its many forests, which cover over half the state. Its Capital is Olympia but the biggest city is Seattle. The estimated population of Washington is 7'614,893 (2019). The governor is Jay Inslee.
Western Washington has a mostly Mediterranean climate, with mild temperatures and wet winters, autumns and springs, and relatively dry summers, while Eastern Washington, the part of the state east of the Cascades, has a relatively dry climate. With half the state covered in forests, it’s no surprise that Washington is one of the country’s biggest lumber and plywood producers. This state is also known for mining valuable metals such as gold, lead, and aluminum.
Washington’s culture is diverse thanks to its relatively recent settlement and role as a major port for Pacific Ocean trade. There are large communities of Asians, Scandinavians, Native Americans, and more recently, Hispanics.
