Missouri has a humid continental climate with cool, and sometimes cold winters, and hot, humid, and wet summers. The Mississippi river's flooding has made this land very fertile, and cotton, soybeans, and rice are farmed in this region. It is is home to the biggest mammal in North America, the American bison, but the state is even better known for its prairies, where hundreds of species of grass grow.

Missouri is the top producer of mined lead in the United States, which is mainly used in car batteries. The state also produces the biggest quantity of lime in the nation, but the manufacturing and service sectors have since the mid-20th century grown to become the major contributors to the state’s gross product.
