Miami-Dade County is in southeastern Florida, with Miami as the county seat. The 2020 population was 2,701,767, the highest in Florida and the core of the country's sixth-largest metro area. The county covers 1,946 square miles. Biscayne Bay splits the mainland from a chain of barrier islands, including Miami Beach. South Beach has one of the best-preserved Art Deco districts in the country, with hundreds of pastel buildings from the 1930s and 1940s. The Florida Keys start at the southern tip of the county, though most of the archipelago actually falls in neighboring Monroe County. More than half the population speaks Spanish at home, and the county government has been officially bilingual since 1973.
