Fairbanks North Star Borough is in interior Alaska, about 196 miles south of the Arctic Circle. The borough seat is Fairbanks, the coldest city in the United States. Population was 95,665 in 2020, spread across a land area roughly the size of New Jersey. In summer the sun barely sets, with nearly 24 hours of daylight around the solstice. In December, that drops to about three and a half hours. The economy grew around military bases and oil industry support after the 1968 Prudhoe Bay discovery. The University of Alaska Museum of the North, designed to echo glacial forms, has collections on Alaska Native cultures and Ice Age fossils. Fairbanks sits south of the Arctic tree line because its summers, while short, get warm enough for spruce and birch to grow.
