New Hampshire

New Hampshire is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It is bordered by Canada in the north, Maine and the Atlantic Ocean in the east, Massachusetts in the south, and Vermont in the west. New Hampshire is the 5th smallest by area and the 10th least populous U.S. state with only 1,359,711 inhabitants in 2019. Its capital is Concord, but its largest city is Manchester. Its governor is Chris Sununu.

The Englishman John Mason named New Hampshire after Hampshire county in England where he’d lived as a boy. He invested in building on the land, but never left England to see it. It is nicknamed "the Granite State" because it has a history of granite mining.

New Hampshire’s climate is highly varied. In winter, temperatures may drop below 0 °F (−18 °C) for several days at a time. Summers are relatively cool, and the mean annual temperature is about 44 °F (7 °C). It is seldom affected by hurricanes and tropical storms although by the time they reach the state they are often extratropical. More than four-fifths of New Hampshire are under forest cover, and it is home of an abundance of birdlife, including species of grouse, woodcocks, pheasant, and ducks.

In the mid-19th century, industrialization took the form of numerous textile mills, which in turn attracted large flows of immigrants from Quebec and Ireland, but this sector collapsed in 1960 and now its industrial outputs are machinery, electric equipment, rubber and plastic products, and tourism is a major component of the economy.
