Maui County takes in four islands in Hawaii: Maui, Lanai, most of Molokai, and the uninhabited Kahoolawe. The county seat is Wailuku on Maui. Population was 164,754 in 2020, across 1,162 square miles of land. The total county area including ocean reaches 2,398 square miles. All four islands were once a single landmass called Maui Nui before rising sea levels separated them. Haleakala, a dormant volcano on eastern Maui, reaches 10,023 feet and is the centerpiece of Haleakala National Park. The annual Maui County Fair draws residents from all the islands. Kahoolawe was used as a military bombing range until 1990 and is now a cultural reserve closed to the public.
