Deschutes County is in central Oregon, on the dry eastern side of the Cascades. The county seat is Bend, and the population is around 200,000 across 3,055 square miles. The county was the last one established in Oregon, created in 1916. Lava flows and volcanic terrain cover much of the landscape. Smith Rock State Park, a few miles north of Redmond, is where American sport climbing started in the 1980s. Mt. Bachelor has skiing in winter, and the Deschutes River runs through Bend. The city has more breweries per capita than almost anywhere in the country. Every July, the nearby town of Sisters hosts an outdoor quilt show that covers the buildings along its main street.
