Custer County is in the mountains of central Idaho, with Challis as the county seat. The 2020 population was 4,275 across 4,937 square miles, making it Idaho's third-largest county by area. The county was named after the General Custer gold mine, staked in 1876. Borah Peak, Idaho's highest point at 12,662 feet, is in the Lost River Range on the county's eastern side. The Sawtooth Range runs along the west. Redfish Lake near Stanley, named for the sockeye salmon that once turned it red each fall, is the most visited spot in the area. Challis Valley Pioneer Days is the main annual event. About one person lives per square mile here.
