Missouri

Missouri is a state in the Midwestern United States, bordered by Iowa in the north; Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee in the east; Arkansas in the south; and Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska in the west. With a population of 6'137,428 residents, it is the 18th-most populous state of the country. Its capital is Jefferson city, but the largest city is Kansas city. Its governor is Mike Parson.

Missouri would become home to a historic lawsuit in 1846 when Dred Scott, a slave, sued for his freedom and lost in 1857. It was one of the events that would lead to the Civil War, which was fought between states that wanted to abolish slavery in the country and those that wanted to keep it legal.

Missouri has a humid continental climate with cool, and sometimes cold winters, and hot, humid, and wet summers. The Mississippi river's flooding has made this land very fertile, and cotton, soybeans, and rice are farmed in this region. It is is home to the biggest mammal in North America, the American bison, but the state is even better known for its prairies, where hundreds of species of grass grow.

Missouri is the top producer of mined lead in the United States, which is mainly used in car batteries. The state also produces the biggest quantity of lime in the nation, but the manufacturing and service sectors have since the mid-20th century grown to become the major contributors to the state’s gross product.
