Alabama is a state in the southeastern region of the United States; it is bordered by the states of Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, Florida to the south, and Mississippi to the west. Alabama has coastline at the Gulf of Mexico, in the extreme southern edge of the state. It has an area of 52419.2 mi², and its capital city is Montgomery. The largest city by population is Birmingham, while the largest city by land area is Huntsville. The population of Alabama was 4,903,185 on July 1, 2019. Alabama is nicknamed the "Yellowhammer State", and is also known as the "Heart of Dixie" and the "Cotton State".

The average annual temperature is 64°F. Generally, Alabama has very hot summers and mild winters. Alabama is fifth when it comes to biodiversity in the US with numerous of freshwater turtles, snails, and mussels. The main crops are cotton, peanuts, soybeans, and corn. Alabama is historically rooted in the iron and steel industry of Birmingham, the development of which was facilitated by accessible deposits of iron ore, coal, and limestone.
