Louisiana

Louisiana, known as the Bayou State, is located in the Southeastern of the United States, on the Gulf of Mexico. It is the 19th smallest State by area and the 25th most populous. The state's capital is Baton Rouge, and its largest city is New Orleans. Its Governor is John Bel Edwards.

Louisiana has a mainly humid subtropical climate with long hot summers and short mild winters. It is often affected by tropical cyclones and is very vulnerable to strikes by major hurricanes. Among the state's wildflowers are the ground orchid and several hyacinths. Many alligators live in the bayous, with turtles, crawfish and catfish. Furthermore, in the Kisatchie National Forest, live the black bear and the the red-cockaded woodpecker.

The French explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle named the region Louisiana in 1682 to honor France's King Louis XIV. French colony until 1803 it was sold to the USA by the French government. Some people called «the Cajun community» still speak French, but it's only 150 000 of them. Sadly known for its slave history, it has kept from this period numerous traditions, like Mardi Gras, Creole and Cajun culture, food, and jazz music.
