Alabama has coastline at the Gulf of Mexico, in the extreme southern edge of the state. It has an area of 52419.2 mi², and its capital city is Montgomery. The largest city by population is Birmingham, while the largest city by land area is Huntsville. The population of Alabama was 4,903,185 on July 1, 2019. Alabama is nicknamed the "Yellowhammer State", and is also known as the "Heart of Dixie" and the "Cotton State".
